Qualifications for Police Officer
Be 21 to 35 years of age
Be a Citizen of the United States
Be able to obtain a Illinois Drivers license
Or be I.T.S.B. certified and have two (2) years of continuous Law Enforcement experience as a commissioned officer ( Full time law enforcement experience may be substituted for college at a rate of 1 to 1).
Be in excellent health with no conditions which would restrict your ability to perform police work
Be able to meet standards of the Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report for entrance into any of the Illinois certified police academies, as required by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board
In addition
Visual acuity must be uncorrected within reasonable limits and correctable to 20/20
You must not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of NOLO CONTENDRE to any Federal or State laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substance.
Persons with any military experience with any branch of the Armed Forces of the United States must have a Honorable Discharge.
Background Investigation Top
Officers of the East Saint Louis Police Department will conduct a complete and thorough investigation of your background to determine your suitability for employment as a Police Officer.
The following occurrence in your background could result in rejection of your application:
Felony conviction
Use of drugs or conviction of a drug related violation
Abuse of alcohol
Antisocial behavior
Poor work record
Poor driving record
Numerous debts which are not regularly being paid
Training
Training will be performed at one of the Illinois certified police academies. Upon graduation from the Academy the new police officer will be assigned to the Uniformed Patrol Division for a probationary period of twelve months. During the probationary period the new officer will work under the direct guidance of an experienced Field Training Officer for 14 weeks.
Advancement Opportunities
The field for advancement opportunities is open to all members from Officer to Chief. Your future success and promotion potential rests solely in your hands. The Department developed a Personnel Evaluation System whereby a Supervisory Officer evaluates each Officer periodically.
