Auxiliary Police

Purpose

The Auxiliary Police Volunteer Program was established as an organized program to serve as a resource to the East Saint Louis Police Department. East Saint Louis has great potential for tremendous growth. The Auxiliary Police Volunteer Program provides man hours in the areas of the administrative activities, developing and supporting Neighborhood Watch Programs, Residential Vacation Checks, Shut-In Visitations, Newcomers Information Program, assisting motorists, traffic direction, and other support duties determined by the East Saint Louis Police Department.

Background

The concept of the APVP, as it pertains to the East Saint Louis Police Department, is two fold in nature. First it gives added visibility to the Police Department by volunteers performing Non-Enforcement service-oriented duties, releasing the commissioned officers to perform duties, which require the need of sworn personnel. Second, the able bodied Auxiliary Volunteers, who wish to make certain contributions of their time and talents toward a community service, will have the opportunity to do so.

Qualifications

Although Auxiliary Volunteers are not sworn officers, there are qualifications to be net as follows:

  • Must be in good physical health with good vision.
  • Must possess a valid Illinois Drivers License with a good driving record.
  • No convictions of a felony or serious misdemeanor crime involving moral turpitude.
  • Must be of unquestionable character.
  • Must be able to donate at least 20 hours per month to the volunteer program and be willing to attend all training sessions.

Uniforms

Auxiliary Volunteers will work in areas that require uniforms. These uniforms will identify these citizens as members of the APVP. Volunteers must also supply their own black leather, plain toe, low quarter shoes or boots and black socks.

Training

Auxiliary Volunteers will be trained in general and specialized topics prior to beginning work in the program. All Auxiliary Volunteers will receive both classroom as well as on duty training with a qualified trainer.
